Why did Kate do it?

crueltyoflove, The Cruelty of Love, writing

“The Cruelty of Love” prefaces with a quote from Alfred Lord Tennyson: “’Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” Kate Johnson, the protagonist of the novel, should have read this before she began her campaign to confront her ex-boyfriends. Her ex-loves haunt her life and she acts.

The Cruelty of LoveKate denies she’s seeking revenge. She justifies her drastic actions by rationalizing that her exes need to be made aware of the self-doubt they awoke in her and the pain they inflicted on her. At the time of the actual break-ups Kate was too young, too inexperienced and too hurt to be able to explain her feelings in an intelligible manner. It wasn’t until many years later, and after time in therapy, that she understood and could actually verbalize what had gone wrong and why she had such a sense of betrayal and injustice.

Why would Kate – a successful career woman, admired and loved by her family and friends, respected by her colleagues, and seemingly happy with her life – risk so much? Did she get satisfaction from her illegal undertaking? Normal people don’t do such things. Or do they?

I’m sure that a lot of you have thought about confronting an ex about a heart-rending break-up, one that left you miserable and shedding tears for a long time – you’d finally get the chance to tell them what you think. I have, but would never have the courage to go to such lengths as did Kate. Everyone says “get over it,” “there are other fish in the sea,” or “move on.” I would agree with them.  But if I had written the book that way it wouldn’t be very interesting.

That’s one of the beauties of writing fiction – I can make my characters do what the ‘darker’ side of me would like to do. After reading “The Cruelty of Love” a friend wrote to me “That ‘darker’ side that you keep hidden away, should be allowed to flourish, be exposed to all and sundry, and let out of the closet!!!”

Fiction lets me expose my ‘darker’ side. So, I let Kate’s feelings stir up her darker side and let her set in motion an ingenious yet dangerous and illegal plan to confront Earl and Charles.

Il Molo – a reader’s visit and a compliment

One of the most rewarding compliments for me concerning my first book, “Il Molo”  was receiving a postcard from a reader who visited the setting of the book. The postcard shown below was sent to me in October 2015 from two musician friends who actually visited Varigotti, it’s beach and “the scene of the crime”. I was really excited when I received it. You can click on the message to read it.

The Cruelty of LoveChapter One – teaser

The sharp metallic sound of steel-capped heels on black combat boots echoed through the corridor, keeping time with all the paraphernalia tapping against the guards’ thighs—keys dangling from metal chains, walkie-talkies, and black wooden Billy clubs. The stocky female escorts, a blonde and a brunette, both with hard chiseled features, were bored and uninterested. This was routine for them; another day, another prisoner.

Musty sweaty odors, mingled with those of stale food, drifted through the air. Walking along on either side of their prisoner tightly holding her upper arms, the guards escorted Kate to what would be her new home for a few years. She stared straight ahead, her peripheral vision taking in the gray cell bars, the gray walls, the gray atmosphere, and the empty cells. All the “ladies” were at lunch. She thought the city jail drab and unwelcoming. This one was slightly worse.

politics, worldevents

I don’t often comment here on world events or politics, but the support for Donald Trump is scary! I want to add my voice to the others who have spoken out about the danger he represents to the US and to the international community.

The Washington Post editorial board interview with Donald Trump is an hour but well worth the time spent.

Don’t be fooled by his cool, calm voice, or the seemingly learned responses. or the “I’m your friend” type comments. Trump is dangerous. He’s a huckster! He may be a construction mogul, but he has absolutely no idea of how government works. Listen especially to his comments on foreign policy issues starting around 34 minutes into the interview.

I cannot believe that there are a lot of Americans who would vote for him. For me that is a disastrous commentary on the state of the US. Some of my fellow citizens have sunken to a level which is absolutely disappointing and disgusting. I sincerely hope that the Republican party bigwigs are more intelligent than their members.

God help us all!!
