Il Molo, marketing, self-publishing

marketingMarketing takes time, it is not free, you have to be patient, and you have to be willing to take risks. This post chronicles the steps I’ve taken over the last six months. If you want to know more about any of my marketing efforts, drop me a comment and I’ll go into the gritty details.

My first novel, Il Molo, was published in March 2014. Writing it was fun and satisfying. Unfortunately, I had no idea of how to get it published. Then I learned about self publishing through CreateSpace and I was off. Fortunately I could rely on the valuable experience of my aunt, Rebecca Sloan, who had already gone the self publishing route for two of her books.

March 15, 2014 – I remember the elation I felt when CreateSpace informed me that Il Molo had been reviewed and was ready for publication. I hit the Publish button – and I was off. Continue reading →

Good reasons to join Goodreads

I thought this was an interesting article and wanted to share it with you. I’m a member of Goodreads and think it’s a good site for both readers and writers.

For authors, it’s a good site to expand the exposure for your book, get reviews, see what others are writing, and even for marketing. For avid readers it’s a good source for learning about new books and you can review books that you’ve read. The only downside is that you realize you don’t have enough time to read everything you think might be interesting.

There’s a new website dedicated to self-published authors. If you want to expand the reach of your self-published book, or if you’re an avid reader and want to discover new authors, go to http://www.literaryselfies.com.

The site is the product of two self-publishers – myself and my aunt, Rebecca Sloan. You can see her books, Branches and Lake Effect on the website.

The site has gotten off to a good start. We’d love to have all the self-published authors join our site. There is no entrance fee. As part of our service to fellow indie authors, we will also post your book(s) on FB, Twitter and Pinterest.

Am I a writer?

Il Molo, self-publishing, writing

After I self-published my first book, “Il Molo”, several friends asked me if I had always written? I often wanted to respond facetiously and say “No, only since the first grade.” However, I refrained myself because I knew that was not the answer they were looking for, nor the question they had asked. They were really asking if I considered myself an author.

The answer is not so easy. My “writing” background is eclectic. When I was a teenager I started a James-Bond-like novel in one of my school notebooks. Now I wish I could find the manuscript and work on it again. I am sure it was thrown out a long time ago. In a high school English course covering the short story as a literary genre, our daily homework assignment was to write a two or three page short story. I do remember concocting literary gems in the morning on the school bus. I have written innumerable proposals, two or three articles for a United Nations organization in Geneva, and numerous satirical articles for a clandestine in-house newsletter for which I was one of the editors.

Am I an author? That depends on one’s definition. Only time will tell. If no one buys my stories, then I guess the answer is clear. However, I have promised myself that I will keep writing. I don’t write every day, but I do think about writing every day. When I find the solution to a stumbling block in the narrative, then I start writing again. As I write other things come to mind, and I continue until the idea well runs dry.
